Confluence Estate Expansion
A Unique Estate.
Confluence Estate sits upon one of the most unique viticultural sites in Oregon. Setting aside the spectacular views and vistas in every direction, Confluence Estate is unique for its size alone, 560 acres!! 100 acres of flat valley floor and 100 acres of predominately South facing hillside is ready for vineyard development. Although the property owns 326 acre feet of irrigation rights from the Umpqua River, we strive to protect our natural resources and only use irrigation for vine establishment. We believe the best quality grapes come from dry farmed vines with intense, and concentrated flavors and aromas.
The climate at Confluence Estate is well suited to premium viticulture. The generally arid climate with little growing season rainfall and low relative humidity allows us to focus on sustainable viticulture. We focus our efforts on canopy management to control disease pressure instead of chemicals. The area is safe from winter deep freeze and the associated risk of vine death; it is also relatively free of the risk of growing season frost.
The South facing hillside will be the location of a "Reserve Level Only" vineyard. A hillside affords major advantages in viticulture. First cold air drainage down the slope mitigates the region’s risk of frost damage compared to what would otherwise be expected for vines on flat terrain. The slope also provides drainage for excessive ground water. These advantages are important. In the Northern hemisphere, a south facing hillside affords even further advantages. The hills tilt or angle to the sun results in more insulation which results in earlier warming of the soil and vine growth. The hillside is advantageous through the growing season and results in considerable more heat units being accumulated than would occur on otherwise equal but flat sites. Hillside soils are also typically thinner and poorer which naturally reduces the vines vigor and crop yield. These individual gains are cumulative and their sum is huge.
Our aim is to be one of the largest, premium quality grape producers in Oregon. Our aim isn't to grow good grapes, it is to grow the best grapes, this is something we have a proven track record of doing well.
